I am someone who was always fascinated by mathematics and regretted not pursuing it... but I am now rethinking that with everything happening with AI. I am quite affected by it especially knowing all the work people put into dedicating their lives to mathematics and now the future is very uncertain given all the recent news (not least of which the most recent winner of the Fields medal is joining Open AI). If I did pursue math and this happened I would be absolutely devastated. What are your views on the future math? Do you think that it involves humans, or that humans will only play a diminished role?
My view is the opposite of what the "AI hype" influencers are saying. I'm convinced that we will need more mathematicians as we develop those systems further. I will cover that more in depth tomorrow.
I look forward to reading it and most times I agree AI is mostly hype, but if even people like Terence Tao or the most recent Fields medalist are saying this I have to step back and listen to what seems to be the majority of the experts. This is indeed what happened to chess and although chess is still very popular, the number one chess player in the world cannot possibly compete with anything even close to the most powerful chess engines.
